My absence

I haven’t been posting for a while because I’ve been feeling very burned out and discouraged after what happened with I Can Has Cheezburger. I’m very hurt by some of the comments by some of the customers saying things like this:

Hugely disappointed with the update, to the point of where I ended up replacing the ICHC app altogether with a bookmark icon created through Safari on my phone’s home screen. At least zooming works properly by going to the blog directly through Safari, and YouTube videos immediately trigger the YouTube app rather than going through two redirectons.

That YouTube issue has been changed in the update that I submitted more than a month ago, which also adds support for Viddler videos which are now being used at FAILblog. Rather than seeing those kinds of complaints, I felt that it would be better to pull the app from sale completely.

I really felt that this version was an improvement over the old one, but people seem to universally hate it. I rewrote a lot of code to make it a lot cleaner and made some very major improvements such as support for ICHC’s API for submitting LOLs. The unapproved update also added a shuffle feature, which was widely requested and eliminated the click to play graphic for movies.

Comments like the ones I’ve seen here just make me feel like giving up iPhone development. I certainly won’t develop any more applications that access the internet.

  1. First of all sorry to hear about the trouble you've been having with apple. That seems to be a common theme for iPhone developers lately.

Secondly, do you understand why so many of your users started giving you poor ratings with the new version? When an "upgrade" turns on ads that have never previously been there is it not reasonable to think people will be mildly annoyed? The experience of that upgrade from a user perspective was like having someone take something of yours, break it, and then demand money so you could have an unbroken version back.

    Just my $0.02

  2. Dam people are rude and smart***. I really don't see why having some ads on a free app is any kind of a problem. I mean if you're too cheap to pay 1$ for a great app like ICHC… Then get over the small ads and STFU.

Like I said on your other post, I REALLY like your ICHC app and I will definetly buy it.

  3. The issue isn't the small ads. The issue is the bait and switch of not having them and then adding them in an "upgrade".

If that's not a big deal to you I'll come to your house and stand in front of your tv and demand money to move and call myself an upgrade to your tv.

  4. I purchased your program when I found the paid version after the upgrade. Frankly it is the most used application on my phone. It brings a smile to me and my friends every day! Please don't feel discourged! I think it is the best application out there! I haven't figured out how to post reviews or I would have put one.

    • Tell Apple to hurry up and approve it 🙂 It's going on two months now in review. I'm having so much fun here with the shake to shuffle feature, which is in that update.
