I’ve renamed the ‘Liberty’ topic to ‘Politics’ since I use it to discuss politics in general.
There has been recent discussion on various Mac sites whether politics should be discussed. I chose to keep politics off MacMegasite completely and instead use this personal weblog to discuss politics.
I’m a Libertarian. I believe in personal freedom and that the government shouldn’t meddle in personal issues such as religion & morality. I tend to criticize the Republicans a lot becuase I feel that they’re much worse hypocrites than anyone else. They talk about freedom and less government, but they’re always quick to jump on religious & moral issues such as abortion.
I don’t care much for religion, and I don’t like to hear the government talking about God all the time. I also believe what a woman does with her own body is her personal decision. The government shouldn’t have anything to do with it. Anything consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home should be none of the government’s business.
Now, about the war.
I don’t believe the US should be the world’s police force. That’s what the UN is for. We shouldn’t go alone against the UN and the rest of the world, and starting a war by launching a preemptive strike against another country is just plain wrong.
Sadam Hussein is a brutal dictator, but he’s not the only one and he doesn’t pose any direct threat to us. He has no intention of attacking us or anyone else unprovoked. Attacking him will only make things much worse by encouraging more terrorism. Our government even realizes that, as they indicated by raising our security level to orange.
Sadam Hussein isn’t the only brutal dictator in the world – there are plenty of others just as bad or worse. North Korea poses a much more serious threat to the US, but Bush doesn’t seem too concerned about them.
Why didn’t the US intervene in Zaire during Mobuto Sese Seke’s regime? Why didn’t we attempt to stop dictators in Nigeria, Liberia, and Sierra Leone?
It’s clear this is nothing more than a personal grudge against Hussein.
If Bush said on September 10th 2001 that we just started bombing the Taliban what would have been your reaction? Waiting for a smoking gun means someone has been shot.
IMHO it's safer for us and the Iraqi people if Saddam's regime goes out of power. If he has no plans at all to ever assist our enemies or hurt us directly at least the Iraqi people will be free. If he did have plans to assist our enemies or attack us in the future, then we've got him taken care of.
Oh, and the UN thinks the same thing–they are just pussies. Without action, the UN is useless. When bombing starts the UN will mean nothing. I've never liked the UN… Giving away our power to other nations who activly work against us is insane.
Also, you have to remember that what we know is the tip of the iceberg. We don't get the daily CIA briefing. Think about that. In a few months when things are more clear, what was really going on will surface.
The nation is behind the president (2/3 are for the war which is unheard of). So are investors (stock market jumped on speculation yesterday).
No matter what your opinion–support the troops. They protect all of us. Even the right to mock the administration/war. 😛
