Complete?

As I do every Tuesday, I checked the “just added” section in the iTunes Music Store. I notice they added “Miles Davis: The Complete B***hes Brew Sessions (Box Set)”. When I clicked on it, I see it’s only a partial album and you can only buy individual songs. I didn’t bother, since I already own it.

C’mon Apple! The name of the album is “Bitches Brew”, not “B***hes Brew”.

Punk Mambo!

I just got the albums “Punk Mambo!” and “Hardcore Juju” by Babaloo. I discovered them while browsing CD Baby, and after listening to the samples I had to buy those CDs immediately.

The songs are variously described as “punk mambo”, “hardcore juju”, “Irish cha-cha”, “Freestyle mambo/salsa”, “Caribbean”, “Reggae”, “ska/cheese”, “arabic-punk/mambo”, among other combinations. Lots of fun & a bit weird.

Shahen-Shah

Using an AppleScript I wrote a few weeks ago which does a Google search on my currently playing track in iTunes, I always find interesting links.

While listening to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, I found this tribute page to him & Fela Kuti, both of whom died in August 1997. I regret that I never had an opportunity to see either of them perform live.

"Taste Tribes"

[Daypop Top 40]

Interesting article, related to this previous post. if it wasn’t for the big record companies & mass marketers like Walmart, no-talents like Britney wouldn’t have a career. The sooner the current entertainment infrastructure disappears, the better for all of us.

“The New York Times had this anti-traditional values article” (actual article link) [Daypop Top 40]

I find it very disturbing that Wal-Mart is shaping cultural tastes. They sell less than 2000 books, CDs, and Videos with only the biggest selling titles represented. By doing so they make the big hits even bigger while making it more difficult for independent titles to sell. I own almost no Top-40 albums; almost all of the CDs I own are from indie labels and lesser-known artists. When I shop for DVDs, I like to browse the foreign & indie films, not the big blockbusters. I hope the little guys can survive.

Longest $0.99 Track in iTMS

I think I may have found the longest track available for individual sale in iTMS: O.D.O.O. by Fela Kuti, at 31:54. I bought it, since it’s a great song and one of the few songs by Fela I don’t own (not counting a 6 minute edit version from a “best of…” collection).

'Strange Fruit' Documentary

The Roots of a Haunting Song Billie Holiday’s brilliant interpretation of ‘Strange Fruit’ made the haunting song about Southern lynchings her own.

It also helped make the composer, a Jewish schoolteacher from the Bronx, nearly anonymous. But Abel Meeropol (link contains image of lynching) gets his due in a documentary…airing [8 April] as part of PBS’ ‘Independent Lens’ series…” (CNN) [metafilter.com]

One of the most powerful songs ever, with some very disturbing imagery.
