When I was trying out street view on the iPhone, I found an interesting continuity error. I’m sure there are many more.
Go to 5th & Mission in San Francisco. It’s daytime.

Take one step north, and suddenly it’s night.

I’m really enjoying the new shuffle feature I added to ICHC. I can’t wait to release this update. Since Apple still hasn’t approved the update to the free ad-supported version that I submitted at the same time, I’ll probably release this as an update to the premium version first.
I’ve implemented a much-requested feature for the next update to I Can Has Cheezburger: you can now shake the iPhone for a random LOL. It still has a few issues I need to work on before I release it. Hopefully Apple will approve the free version before I’m ready with the next update.
I’m giving away 5 free promo codes for I Can Has Cheezburger Premium for the first 5 people who reply to this post with a way to contact them.
The 99¢ ad-free version of I Can Has Cheezburger (which I submitted on June 15) is now available for sale. You can find it here. Strangely enough, the free ad-supported version, which I submitted at the same time, still isn’t ready for sale.
The new features in this version are:
For the next release I plan to add the ability to shake your iPhone for a random image, support for OS 3.0’s mail UI to send LOLs rather than switching to mail.app to send a URL.
I also plan to add support for authenticated access to I Can Has Cheezburger so LOLs you create will be attributed to your screen name on ICHC, and most likely a way to access your favorites. I’m considering making this feature available only in the premium version.
After using the new iPhone 3G S for most of the day, I’m very impressed with the dramatic speed improvement as well as the much better camera. I probably won’t be carrying a point & shoot camera in addition to my D90 any more when I travel.
The new tap to focus feature makes it easy to get sharp in-focus shots. Video recording is just as easy: a slider at the bottom of the screen switches between still pictures & video mode.
Videos appear in the camera roll along with still pictures, and you can upload a video to YouTube by tapping the action button.
I’ve posted a more detailed look here.

My iPhone 3G S arrived via UPS at around 13:30 AM this morning. I’ll write a more detailed post later, but I’ve posted my unboxing pictures here.

My initial impression is that it feels much faster. Application launch times are less than half the time as my old iPhone. Tweetie switches tabs instantaneously and web pages load several times faster. The camera is excellent; I don’t think I’ll carry a point & shoot camera on my next trip.

If your iPhone is running 3.0, it’s very easy to enable internet tethering on AT&T’s network with no ugly hacks. First you’ll need to download this carrier settings file from gizmodo.
Next, quit iTunes and enter the following command in terminal:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
Contrary to many articles, you don’t need to install a pre-release version of iTunes.
When you restart iTunes, connect your iPhone and you’ll be able to option-click the Restore button to choose the .ipcc file in that disk image. Rather than doing a full restore of your iPhone, it will simply update the carrier settings. If the update is successful, the Network page under general settings will show an Internet Tethering option.

Have fun!
Thanks to AppleNova for the terminal trick.
It looks like Apple is making sure that no iPhone 3G S deliveries will arrive before the official release on Friday. Most online iPhone 3G S pre-orders from the Apple Store shipped yesterday with an estimated delivery date of today (June 17). When the shipments arrived at the Louisville, KY UPS processing center, they were “held for future delivery”. I guess all of us will have to wait until Friday to get our hands on one.
I’m planning to release a 99¢ ad free version of I Can Has Cheezburger as well as the free ad supported version. I’m debating whether it should also have any pro features not in the free version.
In particular, I’m adding support for the Cheezburger Authentication API, which would allow LOLs submitted by registered users of ICanHasCheezburger.com to be attributed to them rather than being attributed to “dunno source”.
I suspect the ad-supported version will most likely be more profitable than the 99¢ version thanks to the amount of time people spend in the application, so I’m not really too anxious to encourage people to upgrade, but I’m providing that option for people who’d rather not have the ads.
