Flowering Ginger

My variegated ginger is flowering for the first time since I’ve had it for almost 2 years. It recently got crushed when a tree was taken down, but after I cut away most of it, new growth is coming back.

Toby

My neighbor’s cat Toby has been lost since Sunday night and we’re all pretty worried about him. Toby is very friendly but he’s probably scared & hiding. We put up lots of signs and everyone is looking for him. It’s amazing how many orange cats we have in the neighborhood that look like him.

Trauma-free flea protection

Putting a flea repellent like Frontline on Midnight is usually pretty traumatic and he usually ends up hiding under the bed. Today I discovered an easy no-fuss way to do it. I give him a bowl of food and while he’s eating, I put it on him. He doesn’t even seem to notice and never lifts his head from the bowl. That doesn’t work for Cody, unfortunately, but he usually lets me do it without too much trouble.

Lizard hunt

One of my cats started making a big fuss by the patio, jumping at the window. A few seconds later, Midnight walked into the living room, proudly carrying a lizard in his mouth.

He walked over to me and dropped the lizard at my feet, one of those things cats do that’s both cute & gross at the same time. Unfortunately the lizard was still alive and it got away.

Midnight kept stalking the lizard until it ran behind a piece of furniture. After staring at the empty wall for a few minutes, Midnight finally gave up.

Meanwhile, Cody was sleeping. He finally woke up when the excitement was over.

After the fight

Cody & Midnight had a very noisy fight and were chasing each other around the house for several minutes. A little while later, I caught both of them resting on the dining table, looking as if nothing happened.

Bill Moyers: Theocrats and ideologues in charge of US government.

Via MetaFilter: Bill Moyers: Theocrats and ideologues in charge of US government: For the first time in our history, ideology and theology hold a monopoly of power in Washington. Theology asserts propositions that cannot be proven true; ideologues hold stoutly to a worldview despite being contradicted by what is generally accepted as reality. When ideology and theology couple, their offspring are not always bad, but they are always blind. And there is the danger: voters and politicians alike, oblivious to the facts.

Also seen in Life and Deatherage, this Harris Poll showing that most Americans truly are oblivious to the facts:

  • 64 percent believe that Saddam Hussein had strong links to Al Qaeda (up slightly from 62% in November).
  • 47 percent believe that Saddam Hussein helped plan and support the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001 (up six percentage points from November).
  • 44 percent actually believe that several of the hijackers who attacked the U.S. on September 11 were Iraqis (up significantly from 37% in November).
  • 36 percent believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when the U.S. invaded (down slightly from 38% in November).

This is my friend’s vegetable & herb garden. I just picked up some vegetable & herb seeds, which I started in peat pellets on my patio.

I took this picture of Midnight the same time as I took the last one of Cody. Both of them were napping before I walked into the room.

I haven’t posted any pictures of Cody for a while, so here’s one of him waking up from a nap.
