Phish

I’ve never really been much of a Phish fan, but I’ve gained a lot of respect for them recently. After watching the VH1 show a few days ago, I realized just how great Trey Anastasio is. He really enjoys his music and he did a great job of trading guitar licks with Barthelemy Attiso of Orchestra Baobab.

After that show I wanted to buy “Bouncing Around The Room” but it isn’t available in iTMS. I ended up buying their great covers of Charlie Parker’s Donna Lee & Prince’s Purple Rain

Dave & Trey go to Africa

I watched the show on VH1 last night about Dave Matthews & Trey Anastasio’s trip to Senegal. I found the visit to Goree Island, where slaves were kept, very painful to watch. Their performance with Orchestra Baobab was great. I hope we’ll hear some Senegalese influence on Dave’s next album.

Pogues star MacGowan attacked

Former Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is recovering from facial injuries he suffered when he was allegedly attacked in a London pub.

The 46-year-old singer was assaulted at the Joiner’s Arms pub in central London on Monday evening, police sources said.

The Evening Standard newspaper reported that MacGowan suffered a fractured cheekbone after being kicked, punched and hit with a metal bar.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The motive remains unknown. No property was taken from the victim.”

MacGowan was taken to the nearby St Thomas’ Hospital, but did not stay for treatment.

Two men, aged 20 and 21, were arrested and later released on bail, police said.

The Anglo-Irish singer formed the Pogues in 1982, fusing punk and folk music. The band had a UK top 5 chart hit with “Fairy Tale of New York,” featuring Kirsty McColl, in 1987.

MacGowan left the Pogues in 1991 and has since performed with his own backing band, the Popes. [via CNN]

Move over, Grey Album — "London, Booted"

Via Boing Boing Blog:

“Hot on the heels of the Grey Album comes another innnnteresting mash-up/bootleg project that was originally posted as a collaborative challenge to DJs in February. The goal: Take one track from the Clash’s “London Calling,” and “remix it, add to it, subtract from it
– put your own tributary spin on it.” The result is “London Booted” – 19 tracks (plus a few bonus extras) of eclectically reinterpreted Clash. In return for the download, the project organizers are asking listeners to donate to one of several charities, including Future Forests, a reforestation initiative that was a favorite of Joe Strummer. For £17.50 you can even have your own tree in Joe Strummer’s Rebel Woods, a future forests project on the Isle of Lucy… er… Skye.”

I’m fond of “Bubba’s Got a Brand New Cadillac,” “What about Brixton,” and “(Spanish Bombs) over Baghdad,” a mashup with a track from Outkast’s Stankonia. Hmmmm…. Outklash? Link to London Booted home, and try this alternate site if that doesn’t work.

KeyStation arrived

My M-Audio Keystation 49E arrived. It worked immediately when I plugged it in – no software needed. It looks a lot nicer than most cheap MIDI keyboards I’ve seen, and the keys have a nice feel. I’ll write a full review at MacMegasite in the next day or so.

10 Years Ago Today

On this day in 1994, Kurt Kobain killed himself.

At first I hated Nirvana. The first thing I noticed about them was their poor musicianship, but when I look back on them I realize just how important they were. Kurt was the real thing. His music came from his soul. There was nothing at all phony about Nirvana. Kurt was tortured by his drug addiction and an unhappy childhood. He gave voice to his pain through his music.

Wil wrote this piece about him. Read more here by other writers.

Keystation 49E

I had ordered a m-Audio Keystation 49E from MacMall at the beginning of February. Every time I called about it, the ship date was pushed back. For a long time they said it would ship Mar. 31, which didn’t happen. Now they don’t expect to receive any until the end of this month. I checked other online stores and the story was the same everywhere. I finally canceled the order today and ordered one from the Apple Store, where it’s in stock and will ship in 1-2 days.

UPDATE: it just shipped!
