Playing CDs a Privilege Not A Right

Via Slashdot:

“Tommi Kyyrä, of IFPI Finland has said that being able to play music on a Linux or Apple computer is a privilege not a right, and that those that can’t because of DRM’d CDs should just go out and buy a CD player. Is switching the debate to rights and privileges really where they want to go when we’re talking about something we pay for?”

I think if I pay for a CD, I should have the right to listen to it anywhere and however I like. When I buy a CD I usually load it into iTunes and put the original CD away. The only place I play CDs is in my car, and I usually play mix CDs I burn from music I own.

The Boys from Bob Jones

Mike Doughty posted an interesting item about his encounter with Bob Jones University students:

But these guys weren’t Christians. They were there because their parents made them go there. They told me that if the school’s administrators found out they were at my show they’d be kicked out of school. They told me that kids whose parents taught at the school were obliged to go to the school, or else their parents would lose their jobs.

They told me about “supervised dating,” and girls not being allowed to leave campus unattended by a chaperone, and all kinds of fucked-up shit.

Orientation

I just got this album and I love it. Thione Seck may not be as well known as Youssou N’dour or Baaba Maal but he just may be Senegal’s greatest singer. I hope this album will finally make him an international star.

Bisso Na Bisso

I was surprised to find this song in iTunes Music Store after hearing it on Link TV‘s world music show. I checked LinkTV’s store and they didn’t have it. That song immediately caught my ear since it sampled “Ay Chona La” by Youssou N’dour.

R.I.P. Robert Moog

Bob died this afternoon at his home in Asheville, N.C. He was 71. Bob was diagnosed with brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme or GBM) in late April 2005. He had received both radiation treatment and chemotherapy to help combat the disease. He is survived by his wife, Ileana, his five children, Laura Moog Lanier, Matthew Moog, Michelle Moog-Koussa, Renee Moog, and Miranda Richmond; and the mother of his children, Shirleigh Moog.

Bob was warm and outgoing. He enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. He especially appreciated what Ileana referred to as “the magical connection” between music-makers and their instruments.

A public Memorial Celebration is planned for The Orange Peel for noon, Wednesday, August 26th. Fans and friends can also direct their sympathies or remembrances to www.caringbridge.com/visit/bobmoog.

Bob’s family has established The Bob Moog Foundation dedicated to the Advancement of Electronic Music in his memory. Many of his longtime collaborators including musicians, engineers and educators have agreed to sit on its executive board including David Borden, Wendy Carlos, Joel Chadabpe, John Eaton, David Mash, and Rick Wakeman.

ShareYourMusic.com relaunched

I’ve relaunched ShareYourMusic.com as a separate site which no longer shares content with WorldBeatPlanet. It will provide a community for independent artists with forums and a store to sell their music. Right now I’m only selling CDs through CD Baby, but I’d also like to publish and sell music myself.

It shares the same Drupal installation with WorldBeatPlanet but uses a completely separate database, using Drupal’s multiple site feature. When I was developing the site, rather than creating the database on my PowerBook and uploading it to the live server after I finish configuring it, I created the database directly on the live server, configured it from a local Drupal installation on my PowerBook, and after it was fully set up I edited the settings.php for shareyourmusic.com to point it to the new database.
