My Lexmark Z32 is a piece of crap

I got the Lexmark free when I bought my iBook 2 years ago, although I already owned a Canon S600 which I still use.

The ink is outrageously expensive – after I use up the current cartridges, I won’t use that printer any more.

Now here’s the weird problem I’m having with it: I have it connected to my server, along with the Canon. I print to both remotely from my PowerBook. When I print a test page on the Lexmark, it comes out perfect, but when I print from the powerbook, no black ink appears.

Update: The same thing happens when I print directly from the server. Black appears in graphics, but black text doesn’t appear.

WWDC

I’ll be attending WWDC as well as MacHack. Absolute wants me to go to WWDC, and since we’re Premier ADC members, we get a free ticket.

I still haven’t prepared for my class at MacHack, “C++ for Yoot”.

Useful Script: Search Current Track

This script will search for the title & artist of the currently playing track:

tell application "iTunes" to set t to (name of current track) & " " & (artist of current track)
open location ("http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=" & t & "&btnG=Google+Search")

D-Link AirPlus XtremeG

Today I bought a D-Link DI-624 802.11g wireless router to replace my dead Graphite base station.

So far it seems to work great – all setup is done easily from a web browser. It also replaced my LinkSys BEFSR41 (even though it was still working great) since it has 4 Ethernet LAN ports as well as a wireless access point.

One really cool feature is built-in support for dynamic DNS, so I can have it automatically update my DynDNS hostname whenever my IP address changes.

I’ll write a review at MacMegasite in a few days.

Comments to Readers

I said in my “Starting a Blog (with Movable Type)” article that one of the best ways to build up your readership is to simply leave comments (preferably good ones) and post TrackBacks to the blogs you read.

And so it has happened again. Amy of spiffarific.com (fabu name) has posted a few comments here lately, and partly because I’m intrigued by the fact that she’s a woman, but mostly because I’d never heard of her before, I visited her site. And now she’s in NetNewsWire.

And so it goes. Besides, anyone who can say “the creator is a Microsoft nad-sucking lackey” is someone I’d like to read a little more (hence the title of this post: she left a comment on my blog and turned me into a reader of hers).

Another local Mac guy – I’ll have to add him to my blogroll the next time I update it.

Mac OS X Server 10.2.5

I just upgraded to 10.2.5 server on my Blue & White G3 with disastrous results. The machine boots to a Blue Screen of Death and the desktop never appears. I can SSH into it & AFP works, but the web server and most other services don’t work.

Fun with Windows

I just love Windows 🙂

My friend’s kid wanted to play Claw on my Dell laptop, which is running Windows XP Professional. The game was for Windows 95. I installed it and tried to run it, resulting in a blank screen with music. Hitting any key would quit.

The kid went home disappointed.

Mac OS X 10.2.5

Since I upgraded to 10.2.5, screen updates seem generally faster on my 12″ PBG4. I think they must have improved the GeForce drivers.

I just tried a dialup connection for the first time since I’ve owned my PowerBook, in preparation for being without high speed service for at least a week when I move. It seemed to work well.

Privileged Exec1.0

Privileged Exec is an AppleScript framework that makes it extremely easy create applications that run Unix commands as root without prompting the user for an administrator password every time. This is accomplished by securely storing an administrator password in the default keychain. This password can then be used to run any Unix commands as root with no user interaction. [Studio Log]
