Server upgrade

I just ordered 512M of RAM for my server, a B&W G3/350 with only 320M RAM running Mac OS X Server. I’m using it for my print server, file server, an IMAP server for archiving email, iTunes playlist sharing, a test server for my web sites, and I also have a few people logging in to it remotely. I *may* also try overclocking it to 400 MHz, although just adding RAM will probably improve the performance nicely.

IMAP is working

I’m now able to log in to my IMAP server using Mail.app. Entourage and Eudora. I had to change the default options to require MD5 challenge-response instead of password authentication.

Server Change

I plan to replace Mac OS X Server on my B&W G3 with Mandrake LinuxPPC after I put in a bigger drive. I’ve been fighting with Apple’s IMAP server for the last day trying to get it to let me log in, even though I have mail enabled for my account. It would be easier to just use a normal IMAP server.

Update: I wasn’t able to install Mandrake Linux. It doesn’t appear compatible with my KVM switch. I now think a better solution would be “normal” Mac OS X with a third-party IMAP server and standard administrative tools such as Webmin

Non-Dead Router

I think my D-Link DI-624 router just died. It keeps rebooting constantly and I now can’t connect to it at all. I disconnected it from my network and I’m now using my G4 minitower as a software base station.

Update: I tried it again this morning and it’s working. It seems to have an overheating problem.

OpenOffice.org

I joined OpenOffice.org last night & downloaded the Mac source code. I haven’t had a chance to do anything with it yet. I don’t know if I’ll have much time to work on it, but hopefully I’ll be able to contribute something.

MS Blaster

From Jeremiah Rogers’ Weblog:

Well well, my net connection at home is down again. I called COX and they seemed to care, a little bit, but not enough to troubleshoot. Apparently their entire network has collapsed. I’ll attribute this to Blaster and dumbfuck admins. When powered on the cable modem goes into an epilleptic fit of flashing leds which it normally only does briefly once it’s found the network and stays lit full-time.

In other news: the network at my mom’s hospital is down because of Blaster as well. Non-functional.

The sad thing is that Blaster is far from the worst a worm could do: it carries a minimal payload. Can you imagine what else a worm like that is capable of?

My company’s email system got a big hit from the Sobig worm.

Thanks, Microsoft for allowing your insecure software to destroy the internet.

New D-Link Firmware

I just installed D-Link’s new 1.24 firmware on my DI-624, which upgrades it to the final 802.11g standard. So far it seems to work very nicely – I’ll see if I still get the frequent disconnects I see most nights.

Epson C82

I just got an Epson C82 to replace my Canon S600. It’s very nice – faster than the Canon & the print quality is excellent.

This CD comes with a copy protection DEVICE

Compilasian, The World of Indipop (Narada World, 2003)

The release of Narada World’s Compilasian (The World of Indipop) comes as more of a sign of changes to come in the record industry than as the cutting edge music it boast. For those readers not aware of the Indipop label, it is a cottage industry label created by producer Steve Coe who is also Sheila Chandra’s husband. Narada World recently licensed Indipop catalogue, including Sheila Chandra’s Indipop releases. And with the release of Compilasian, itself a compilation of unreleased tracks of the groups Monsoon, Sheila Chandra, The Ganges Orchestra, Jhalib and East West, comes with a piracy protection device, called Copy Control. Only time will tell if this device actually puts more money in the hands of recording artists or acts as a trigger for more paranoia in the world. The Copy Control actually comes with its own player and a symbol reflective of the big brother that is watching you. This could cause discomfort in even the most innocent record buyer, especially coming at a time when people believe that the government too is watching their every move. And by the way, as a journalist, I am here to get the word out on musicians and I do not condone piracy. However, I will also say that there is too much fear in the world and I am disappointed that so many establishments succumb to fear instead of spreading love on the planet. Trust is a derivative of love. Protection and security are derivatives of fear (a gentle reminder). [World Music Central News]

Not that I’m wishing failure for the artists, but I hope nobody buys this CD. We shouldn’t have to put up with copy protection devices. We need to let the record companies know we’re not going to stand for that.
