Preparing for the Coming Era

Preparing for the Coming Era of Participatory News

“Meet the Millennials, the 71 million children of Baby Boomers who are coming of age. They download music into mobile players. The expression “You sound like a broken record” means nothing to them. On their cell phones, they never hear a busy signal or fail to get an answer. Pearl Harbor and Vietnam are the stuff of movies; September 11 is a defining event. MTV informs them the way the Big Three Networks informed their parents. They don’t read newspapers. Computer use and Internet connectivity are mainstream activities. They consider the special effects in the vintage film Star Wars bogus.

The Millennials are acoustic. They respond to graphics, sound, action, interaction, and immersive activities. Through their experiences, they begin to shape the future of news on a small, inter-connected planet….

As an interconnected society moves toward participating in the news, the Brotherhood of News seeks to protect its values and exert its control. Just as zero changed the equation shaping humanity’s vision of the universe, accessible media changes the equation that shapes news and informs society. Everyone is a journalist in the age of access. But for most news organizations, collaboration with their audience is an irrational concept, a dangerous idea” [Online Journalism Review, via Tomalak’s Realm]

A tad over the top, but it’s still a good explanation of where news may be heading.

Morons in the News: Fred

Morons in the News: Fred Phelps And His “Church” Go To Alabama To Be Pathetic. For the pathetic little man he is, Fred Phelps sure generates a lot of commotion… [Morons Dot Org]

One of my friends who’s openly gay interviewed Fred Phelps for the newspaper he publishes. He says Fred Phelps is the most evil person he’s ever met. His only followers seem to be members of his immediate family. I looked at his web page recently and I almost threw up. He’s praising the 9-11 attackers and saying the US deserved it. He makes Rev. Falwell look like a moderate.

You need the newest version

You need the newest version of Internet Explorer or Netscape to “browse” the Web in style. The new Internet “browsers” are faster, safer, and include extras that bring the Web to life. Best of all, they’re free, so get your new software in just 3 easy steps!

The message I see when I attempt to load www.warner.com via OmniWeb. If I turn on OmniWeb’s ‘pretend to be IE 5.1 on OS X’ compatibility feature, the site renders just fine.

Ironically, the site is broken if I try to visit via IE on OS X.

BellSouth.net does the same thing.

Microsoft Windows + NSA = loopholes in security: “A careless mistake by Microsoft programmers has revealed that special access codes prepared by the US National Security Agency have been secretly built into [almost all versions of] Windows.” an interesting article that really shouldnt be surprising, and all the more reason to buy a mac.
